In Anchorage

Saturday, Feb 28

Jim and Juanice, our friends, picked us up this morning to take us to the airport.  When we got to Nashville, we were an hour late leaving.  Something about weight and balancing.  We had to take on extra fuel, because Denver had low visibility.  They had to take some of the suitcases from down below and put them up in the overhead bins.  We sort of just figured we would miss our flight in Denver.  But when we got to Denver the flight going to Anchorage was delayed.  We did have to make a couple of gate changes, but we had plenty of time.

What do you do on a long flight?  We both read quite a bit.  I also worked on a couple  of dot-to-dot pictures.

opps, it's upside down.  Oh well.   We played a card game also.  It really wasn't a bad flight.

Jerry and Melissa picked us up at the airport.  Scott had supper ready for us when we got to the church.  He had made homemade chicken soup and corn bread.  It tasted really good.

There is a Fur Rendezvous Celebration downtown.  They had fireworks that we could see from the church.

Our friend, Anne was supposed to fly in tonight.  She got a text last night that her flight was cancelled.  She was going through Dallas.  She finally got to talk to an agent today and she will not be coming in until Tues.  She was really disappointed.  We will put her to work when she comes!!

Sunday, March 1

We got up this morning and drove up to Wasilla.  We wanted to go to church up there.  First Baptist in Wasilla is the church that we work out of in the summer.

On the way up there was a lot of ice fog.  This is ice that is formed on the trees when it is foggy.  I took this picrture while we were driving.

Howard got these pictures at the church in Wasilla.

There has been very little snow here in Alaska  this winter.  We went out to lunch with Carolyn, the church secretrary.  She has become a very good friend of ours.  She and Howard celebrate birthdays in March, just a day apart.

The coulds lifted a little bit as we were coming home and we saw a glimps of the mountains!

Monday, March 2

We spent most of the day today, going through the food pantry and sorting out the food stuff.  Also got rid of all the opened things.  We got it all organized and ready to restock it.

We had a beautiful view of Mt. McKinnley (Denali) this morning.  We don't always see it from Anchorage.  It is so pretty with the sun shining on it.

Sleeping Lady (Susitna) was pretty with the sun shining on the snow.  It clouded up soon after I took this picture.

Howard and I made a WalMart run for a few things.  Tomrrow we have a staff meeting at 10:30, then lunch for staff.  In the afternoon we pick up Anne, who is flying in from Arkansas.  We will do a Sam's shopping after she gets here.

Not sure if I will get another blog done before we go to Fairbanks.  We have things to prepare as the teams come in on Thursday.  The Iditarod race starts on Monday from Fairbanks.  Right now the weather forcast for the day of the race is a high of 3 degrees and a low of -17 degrees.  It is going to be a cold day for the teams helping to set up.  Thankfully most of our work will be done inside.  We will have to get out and do some shopping, and of course get out to the site of the race part of the time.

Continue to pray for us.  The real work will be starting soon. the temp in Anchorage tonight is 36 with a low of 30.  This isn't much different than we have had at home this winter.

Today, my Dad would have been 100 years!

Fun Weekend

Matt, Amy, and Abigail came down last weekend and spent time with us.  We had not seen them since Thanksgiving, and Abigail had changed so much!  She is saying quite a few words now.

They came down early Friday to miss the storm.  We had shopping to do at Costco.  Howard had a dinner fo fix at church for the men Sunday night.

Abigail spent some time just dragging around a couple of boxes.  She also loves carrying around tote bags with stuff in it.  Maybe she is born shopper.

We had potato cheese soup and taco soup ready when they got here. Since Abigail can't have dairy she had taco soup.  She had never had it before and she ate three bowls of it.  Nothing wrong with her appetite

One lunch she had left over taco soup and pickles.  What a combination!!  She loves pickles.  I can't imagine a worse combination.

She loves to be read to.  Daddy reads to her before she goes to bed at night.

She loves playing with a keyboard.  I guess she is her grandfather's granddaugter.  He spent many years teaching typing.

Here she is with her fox.  She now says fox, but it was wolf for awhile.

We did get a game of Hand and Foot in before they left Monday.  I didn't get any family pictures.  I will have to do a better job next time.

The next time we see them baby #2 will probabaly have arrived.  They are expecting the end of April.
When Matt got home he asked the IT department at work, if they had any old keyboards.  He brought one home and now Abigail has her "own" keyboard.  She is trilled with it.

Getting Ready

We are getting ready for our March trip to Alaska to volunteer with GraceWorks Alaska.  We went up last year, and they have asked us to come up again this spring and cook for the teams that come up.

We have been getting prepared for the frozen north by living here in TN.  We had quite the ice storm a week and a half ago.  In fact it was colder here than Alaska several days.

Today we woke up  to a nice snow cover.  It was a welcome change from the ice that took several days to melt.  This snow won't last long, as it is going to be above freezing today.

Notice the ice bump still on our patio.  It was very thick.
We had a lot of "ice damming" in this last ice storm.  The ice was so thick in the gutters, that it went up under the shingles on the roof.  As  the ice melted, the water leaked into houses.  We did not have it, but some of our neightbors did.

Our bags are packed and ready to go.  Now is the time to second guess what you are taking and decide if you need to leave something for add more to it.  :)  We are leaving Saturday morning and flying to Anchorage via Denver.  We will be in Anchorage about a week then will be driving 8 hours up to Fairbanks.  Because of the lack of snow in some areas of the trail for the Iditarod race, the restart is moving to Fairbanks instead of Willow.  We will be riding with the others with GraceWorks Alaska.  We will be in Faibanks two nights.  We will be cooking for our teams up there.

Fairbanks is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights.  We hope we have the opportunity to see them this year.

We would appreciate prayers for our trip.  Pray for our stamina.  My back has been giving me some problems.  Yesterday I must have pulled a muscle, so it has been hurting.  I would appreicate prayers for a quick healing.

Next pictures should be from Alaska!!

Ice Storm

Last Monday we got some snow and then we got sleet.  We have not been above freezing all week.  We did venture out a couple of times after the main roads were clear.  Here are some pics I got of the ice.

Actually, Im trying out using my iPad and iPhone to do my blogging.  Matt helped me to set it up. When we got to Alaska next week, I don't want to take my computer with me.  Now I can take my pictures from my iPhone and put them into my dropbox and upload them onto my iPad.

A big thank you to Matt, for helping me do this.

Ending 2017

It has been awhile since I have blogged, so I thought I would just do a catch up.  We had Thanksgiving at our house this year  Brett, Lauri...
